Although tea is consumed as a general and casual drink, there are several circumstances or special occasions in which tea especially is prepared and served in the Chinese culture. The following are a few examples: During formal occasions, tea is served by younger generations to the older as a sign of respect. Similarly, during business events, tea is served by lower ranked employees to higher ranked ones. A person can serve tea to express apology or regret. During weddings, tradition was for the married couple to serve their parents tea. Tea was also used as a way to connect married couple’s families.

With Chinese culture influenced so much by tea, the use of the Chinese teapot has developed its own culture.  Chinese teapots can be found in many forms and designs.  The two most popular teapots for serving tea during occasions are the Yixing and Gaiwan teapots.  This website will explain the background and use of these teapots.
